How to Prepare to Return to Music Lessons After Winter Break

A piano sits without being used during the winter holiday season.Making it to the winter break is the first-semester goal of just about every student. The holiday break is a good chance to take it easy, have a rest, visit family, maybe go on a trip, and celebrate. After the first half of the school year, a break is necessary. Rest is part of all exercise programs and is an important part of growth.

Music students are no different; they need a break. Unfortunately, many music students take the full break off from practicing their instruments. Now is a great time to take out your instrument and play around a bit in prep for the return to regular lessons in the new year. Keep reading to learn our tips for how to get yourself ready to return to regular music lessons after a winter break.

Do Some Warm-Ups

Getting right into a workout is a bad idea - your muscles need a chance to get up to speed. Playing an instrument is no different. Going through some warm-up exercises can help loosen up your body. Warm-ups can help you avoid cramps or injuries. Spraining a wrist or finger (yes, it’s possible) will mean more time off that will only delay your progress.

Check Your Posture

After taking time off, your posture and form may have dropped off. Slouching is so much easier than sitting tall and poised. Start practicing sitting up tall in every chair you sit in. You don’t have to correct your posture all the time, but doing so a few times per day will help you in the long run.

Games Will Get You Back Into Playing

The more fun an activity is, the more likely you are to do it. Try playing memory games with music online. Here are a ton of apps from Google Play that can help you get back into music. Add some more fun by playing popular songs. You could play a back and forth game where you let the artist do one verse, then you do the next one. Get into a character and you may have some more fun!

Jam Out with Some Friends

Get your friends together and have a jam session. Solo practice is important, but that will come soon enough. Now is the time to enjoy what you can do and have some fun. Get as many people together as you can and play some songs you all know. It can also be fun to show off a song one of you learned and then help teach the others to play it with you.

Getting Back to Regular Music Lessons with Great Teachers

Breaks from school are never long enough. Definitely take some time off, but make sure to get some playtime in as well. Keep it fun and practicing won’t be so bad when you return to school. If you need a new teacher to help take you or your child to new heights, Evola’s professional and engaging teachers are ready to take on new students.
